Christopher Madden became a copyist At the National Gallery of Art in 2019 after a 35-year career as a Banknote Picture Engraver for the U.S. Treasury in Washington DC. He retired as the Lead Engraver and his work included images on U.S. currency, postage stamps and the official (engraved) portrait of President Barack Obama.
Chris is a graduate of the Ohio State University and also studied at he the Columbus College of Art and Design, the Art Students League of New York and Alexandria VA and Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia PA. He is a vice-President for the Frederick County Art Association, a member of Gallery 322 in Frederick MD and a regional teacher at the Delaplaine Art Center, the Griffin Art Center, The Yellow Barn at Glen Echo MD and the Frederick Book Arts Center. His Rushing River Art Studio is in Augusta WV.
Chris has described his studying master works as an incredible opportunity to learn from true artistic geniuses. The insights and skill development derived from “picking the brains” of these masters infuse the methods and approaches Chris undertakes in making his own paintings.
